GrapevineStar Entertainment Inc. and Grapevine, Texas join with the Smithsonian to Celebrate Sixth Annual Jazz Appreciation Month

For the Smithsonian Institution and its National Museum of American History the month of April means one thing: Jazz. This April marks the sixth annual commemoration of Jazz Appreciation Month, a celebration of jazz as both a historical and living American art form launched by the Museum in 2001.
The Grapevine, Texas Jazz Appreciation Month celebration began in April 2002. The Grapevine JAM created by Grapevine Heritage Foundation board member, Jacob R Miles III of Grapevine, Texas based GrapevineStar Entertainment Inc. began as a music heritage, education and performance series celebrating America’s original art form. Past participants and events have included, Grapevine High School Jazz Band, Colleyville Heritage Middle School Jazz Band, University of North Texas Jazz Lab Band, Mr. Bandman, Pecos River Brass Band, Jazz Art exhibits as well as its Blues and Bar-B-Q performances.
“Jazz is an integral part of America’s history and culture, Grapevine, Texas and the North Texas region is one of the fastest growing tourist and convention destinations in America. We are focused on assuring that Jazz is and will continue to be a integral part of the regions education and entertainment activities”……said Jacob R. Miles III, CEO of Grapevine, Texas based Grapevine Star Entertainment Inc.
This year the jazz featured at the Palace theater during Jazz Appreciation Month begins April 11 with the Inner City All Stars live in concert. They have rocked New York’s Apollo Theater – now come out and see them live at Grapevine’s Palace! This upbeat, jazzy, inspirational, uniquely funky band will have you stomping your feet and dancing in the aisles.
The Jazz at the Palace continues on April 24th with the innovative Paul Slavens and His Texclectic Band, from the fertile North Texas jazz scene, an evening at a Paul Slavens show is a one-of-a-kind event. Mr. Slavens is a composer-pianist-improv comedic musician and bandleader. Possessing a unique skill for making something out of nothing, Mr. Slavens takes song title suggestions from the audience and turns them into full blown compositions, while the audience watches, listens and laughs. Every Paul Slavens show is unique, musically adventurous and very entertaining. Playing an eclectic mix, the audience might hear Duke Ellington next to Devo next to Nina Simone. Don't miss it!
JAM is now recognized by all 50 states and 20 other countries.
“Jazz is a truly American style of music that has played an important role in our heritage,” said Brent D. Glass, director of the National Museum of American History. “Through the Smithsonian’s Jazz Appreciation Month activities, we will highlight jazz and its history and expose audiences to this significant piece of American culture.”
The Smithsonian operates the world’s most comprehensive set of jazz programs. The National Museum of American History is home to incomparable jazz collections that include 100,000 pages of Duke Ellington’s unpublished music and such objects as Ella Fitzgerald’s famous red dress, Dizzy Gillespie’s angled trumpet and Benny Goodman’s clarinet. Though the Museum is closed for renovations, prized jazz artifacts can be seen in its “Treasures of American History” exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum. Such artifacts include Louis Armstrong’s cornet, Gillespie’s angled trumpet, Ellington’s score of “Mood Indigo” and Tito Puente’s timbales.
The National Museum of American History collects, preserves and displays American heritage in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific and military history. Documenting the American experience from Colonial times to the present, the Museum looks at growth and change in the United States. The museum is closed for major renovations and will re-open in summer 2008.
